John Farnham’s sons have spoken out about their father’s devastating cancer battle.

The legendary Australian singer, 73, was diagnosed with mouth cancer last August and underwent a 12-hour operation to have a tumour removed.

He was hospitalised again with a lung infection last month, his family confirmed.

In an interview with this month’s issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, Robert and James Farnham detailed their father’s bravery and resilience.

‘You have to keep positive and not get bogged down,’ Robert, 43, said.

‘It’s cruel and brutal but they’re the cards you’re dealt in life and cancer doesn’t care who you are.’

John’s sons said they were incredibly proud of the You’re the Voice star as he faces the toughest battle of his life.

‘He’s inspiring us every day, but then again, he always has,’ Rob added.

John’s eldest son also noted his father had been showing positive signs in his recovery, especially following his most recent surgery.

A trailer for the film was released last week, and despite touching on some very heavy topics, it tells the inspirational story of the Australian music icon who lost everything – but after one last try he became a much bigger sensation.

In never-before-seen footage, John talks about his financial struggles, having depression, and fighting against people who didn’t believe he could be a star again.

‘Either I was working or asleep, so when I was awake I was vulnerable,’ Farnham says in the trailer. ‘People never saw me as a credible singer.’

The singer admitted that after his teen stardom had faded, his wife Jill suggested they treat themselves and their son Rob to dinner at McDonalds.

With a tear in his eye, he explained: ‘I actually couldn’t take them. We didn’t have the money.’

The trailer is filled with famous faces, including Celine Dion, Robbie Williams, Olivia Newton-John, Richard Thompson, Jimmy Barnes and Richard Marx.

‘His voice was incredible,’ Dion says at the beginning of the trailer, and British pop star Williams agrees, saying: ‘It fills in the gap where religion should be.’

The iconic late Olivia Newton-John adds: ‘Music is so important to us. It can heal you, it can go straight to somebody’s heart.’

Farnham was rushed to hospital with a respiratory infection late last month.

The crooner had been recovering from major surgery in a rehabilitation centre, before he was hospitalised again with a lung infection.

‘He is currently being treated for a respiratory infection in hospital, but he is comfortable and receiving the very best care,’ his family said in a statement.

Farnham underwent a 12-hour operation to have a tumour removed at a Melbourne hospital last August, shortly after being diagnosed with mouth cancer.

He only discovered he had the cancerous growth in his mouth after his wife insisted on taking him to the doctor for a check-up.

Farnham’s team announced at the time he was ‘unlikely’ to ever perform again.
