Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines will be celebrating 10 years of their hit home renovation series Fixer Upper with a new installment on the Magnolia Network, Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse. But some fans are not enjoying the direction in which the franchise is heading.
After seeing the first look trailer of their new series on social media, fans had some criticism to share.
“I don’t like watching HGTV personalities renovating their own luxury 2nd or 3rd homes. It looks like they’re showing off,” one fan commented.
The trailer shows the couple taking a walk through the palatial home and commenting on its “showstopper” features, which include a pool, floor-to-ceiling windows, and more.
“We did it, we got the lake house,” Chip says in the trailer. “I bought that lake house for our 10-year celebration.”
Joanna notes that this project was a major deal for the couple as they celebrate almost a decade of Fixer Upper. “There’s something about it that just feels significant that this project landed on our 10-year Fixer celebration,” she says.
Other fans in the comments section did not seem to agree with the viewer’s opinion. “How dare they work hard and make money whilst we all enjoy watching the show,” one fan fired back.
Others noted that “the home isn’t for them,” though that was not clarified in the trailer. The couple auctioned off their last renovation project, a property in Waco, Texas, known as the Cottonland Castle which they renovated in Fixer Upper: The Castle.
However, on another post from the Magnolia Network about the series, another viewer seemed to agree. “It was fun when they fixed up houses that REALLY needed it. now it’s just renovating expensive houses,” they commented.
Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse will be their fifth home renovation series. The Gaines couple first got started with their hit HGTV show Fixer Upper, which ended in 2018 after five seasons. They later rebooted the series in 2021 when they launched their own network, the Magnolia Network.
“When Fixer Upper premiered 10 years ago, we couldn’t have imagined the journey we had ahead of us,” the Gainses said in an interview with Variety. “Though a lot has changed and evolved in the decade between then and now, our love for home is still at the heart of everything we do.”
Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse will have six episodes which will premiere two at a time on Magnolia Network and HGTV starting June 2.
The new series will be available to stream on Max.
