Who is Shamina Begum?
British-born woman of Bangladeshi ancestry Shamina Begum entered Syria to join the terror group Islamic State at the age of 15 in 2015. She appealed against a decision to revoke her UK citizenship but she has lost the appeal. The government dismissed her appeal and she will remain in Syria.
She left London at the age of 15 to travel to Syria where she joined the Islamic State group or IS. Her legal team will keep fighting the court until Shaina does get justice and until she is back home. Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr said,
“It could be argued the decision in Ms Begum’s case was harsh. It could also be argued that Ms Begum is the author of her own misfortune.
“But it is not for this court to agree or disagree with either point of view.
“Our only task is to assess whether the deprivation decision was unlawful. We have concluded it was not, and the appeal is dismissed.”
However, Shamina’s legal team member Gareth Peirce said that the United Kingdom was under a moral duty to take her back as other nations had with citizens found in Syria.

Yago Riedijk is known as the husband of Shamina Begum. Yago is a former ISIS member, fighter, and controversial figure from Arnhem, Netherlands.
Yago Riedijk and Shamina got married shortly after she arrived in Syria in 2015. Together, they had three children, 2 of whom passed away due to disease or malnutrition and the third child passed away due to pneumonia.
Yago Riedijk is 30 years old who is in a Kurdish detention center in northeastern Syria. He and his wife have been stripped of their citizenship by their respective governments.
Yago was born and brought up in Arnhem, Netherlands into a middle-class family attending a public school. He had a passion for music and sports. He was not a religious man and had no connection to Islam or the Muslim community. He described himself as a normal Dutch Kid. He had a very good childhood.
When he was 17 years old, he met a Muslim girl online and fell in love with her so he converted to Islam adopting the name Yaqoob, and started to go to a Mosque where he learned more about his new religion. He was influenced by online propaganda and extremist preachers over time. His family didn’t approve of his conversion and his views, so he became estranged from his family and friends.
He started to feel rejected by Dutch society so he decided to leave the Netherlands and joined ISIS in Syria in October 2014 informing his parents that he was on a vacation to Turkey and crossed the border into Syria with the help of a smuggler.
He went to Syria because he wanted to help the oppressed people and fight against the enemies of Islam in Syria. He took a training course and swore allegiance to the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. By the leader of ISIS, he was provided a weapon and a uniform and he was assigned to a fighting unit.
Yago Riedijk had been involved in several battles and witnessed atrocities committed by the terror group but he didn’t dare to question or criticize them because he was so afraid of the consequences but he had no choice so he followed the orders. He revealed that he was brainwashed and manipulated by the ISIS ideology and propaganda.
In February 2015, Samina Begum who was a 15-year-old girl from London and ran away from her home with her two school friends to join ISIS, met Yago Riedijk at a women’s center in Raqqa where she was staying after her arrival. Yago was informed that there was a girl who wanted to marry but Yago was not interested because of Samina’s age which was 15 years but he accepted the offer anyway.
Yago said that he was lonely and looking for a partner and he found her in a good state of mind who made her own choice so he got married after 10 days of their first meeting. They started to live as a married couple in a house in Raqqa and gave birth to three children two boys and a daughter but their children are not alive.
Their first child, son Abdullah passed away due to pneumonia at hte age of 8 months. Their second child, son Amin passed away due to malnutrition and a blood infection at the age of 6 months.
Yago and Shamina’s daughter Sara passed away due to a heart defect at the age of 2 weeks. Yago was heartbroken and blamed ISIS for his children’s deaths because the living conditions under ISIS were not good, it was horrible and inhumane. They didn’t have enough food, medicine, and security. In order to get a peaceful life, they had to move from place to place to avoid airstrikes and attacks by the enemies.
Even, Yago Riedijk and his wife Shamina Begum tried to escape from ISIS several times but they couldn’t escape and they felt that the decision to join ISIS was their biggest mistake. Yago was imprisoned and tortured by ISIS after ISIS group members accused him of being a Dutch spy. However, he succeeded in escaping from the prisons and met his wife and they fled from the ISIS stronghold of Baghuz in 2019.
Yago Riedijk surrendered to a group of Syrian fighters while his wife Shamina with their newborn son Jarrah ended up in a refugee camp in northern Syria.
Currently, Yago is being held in a Kurdish detention center in northeastern Syria. If he returns to the Netherlands, he will face a 6-year jail term for joining ISIS. However, he wants to give his wife and son a better life so he is ready to face justice and cooperate with the authorities.
However, the Dutch government revoked his citizenship and declared him an undesirable alien. The government has no intention of bringing him back in any way.
Yago’s wife Shamina’s citizenship has been also revoked by the British government. She is also ready to face justice and rehabilitate herself.
Right now, the couple are separated and have not seen each other since they left Baghuz.
