Naresh Gupta was a former IAS officer. He earned a reputation for being a firm chief electoral officer. He became an IAS officer in 1982 and started his IAS career as a sub-divisional magistrate in Uttar Pradesh.
He served Tamil Nadu in many positions including as Sivaganga’s first collector from 1985 to 1986. He had been a secretary to Governor from 1991 to 1993. He was the home secretary from 2001 to 2002. He had been a member secretary of the state Planning Commission from 2002 to 2005.
He served as CEO in two spells for about 8 years which made him a prominent figure. He got hired as a member of the Central Administrative Tribunal after his retirement. He retired in 2010 from his IAS service.

Veteran Civil Servant Naresh Gupta Passed Away
Naresh Gupta passed away on 10 April 2023 at a private hospital in Chennai on Monday afternoon because he was suffering from a brief illness.
R.N. Ravi (Governor) condoled the death of Naresh Gupta on Monday. The Raj Bhavan said in a Twitter post,
“Saddened by the demise of veteran IAS officer Thiru Naresh Gupta. He served the people of Tamil Nadu with the utmost diligence and integrity, and will always be remembered as an outstanding administrator. Condolences to his family and friends.”
M.K. Stalin (Chief Minister) termed Naresh a follower of Gandhian philosophy.
Santa Sheeloa Nari described him as a very conscientious, helpful, and diligent person.
