Early Life, Age, Education, And Career

Thulasizwe Buthelezi was born on June 15, 1972, in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal, and is 51 years old as of 2023 June. He is the sixth child and third son of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Princess Irene Audrey Thandekile Mzila.

He was born and brought up in a politically active family, his father was the chief minister of the KwaZulu bantustan during apartheid and led the IFP, a Zulu nationalist party that opposed the ANC.

Thulasizwe attended Impumalanga Primary School in Mahashini, Nongoma, and later pursued his education at Adams College in Amanzimtoti, completing his matriculation in 1990.

He furthered his studies at the University of Pretoria, earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1994. Additionally, he holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of South Africa, completed in 2001.

In 1994, Thulasizwe joined the IFP, following in his father’s footsteps. He began his political journey as a councilor in the Ulundi Local Municipality, chairing the finance committee from 1996 to 2000. Thulasizwe then served as Ulundi’s mayor from 2000 to 2006 and as deputy mayor from 2006 to 2011.

Elected as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature in 2011, he represented the IFP.

He assumed roles such as chairperson of the finance and economic development portfolio committee and later as chairperson of the standing committee on public accounts. He also held positions as the IFP’s provincial treasurer and deputy chairperson of the party’s caucus in the legislature.

Re-elected in 2019, Thulasizwe became the leader of the official opposition in KwaZulu-Natal, and he was appointed as the national spokesperson for the IFP. In this capacity, he has been outspoken on issues like service delivery, corruption, governance, economic development, social justice, and security.

Thulasizwe has also played a role in negotiations between the Zulu royal family and the government after the passing of King Goodwill Zwelithini in March 2021 and the ensuing succession dispute.
