Prabha Atre Biography, Wikipedia, Age

Dr. Prabha Atre, a well-known classical singer, composer, and author, passed away at the age of 92 on 13 January 2024.

Born and raised in Pune to parents Abasaheb and Indirabhai Atre, she had a sister and was not married.

From a young age, Prabha and her sister were passionate about music, but they didn’t consider it as a career until someone suggested that it could benefit their mother’s health. This led Prabha Atre to delve into classical music, receiving formal training.

In addition to her music career, Prabha pursued her studies, obtaining a Bachelor of Science from Fergusson College in Pune, an LLB from the University of Pune, and eventually a PhD in music.

She also studied at Trinity Laan Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London and Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal.

While initially playing roles in Marathi theatre classics, such as Vidyaharan and Saubhadra, Prabha gained recognition as a senior vocalist in the country, specializing in Kirana Gharana.

She contributed to various musical genres like Ghazal, Geet, Khyal, bhajans, Dadra, and more. Some of her popular songs include “Kal Nahi Aaye,” “Tan Man Dhan Tope Varu,” and “Jagu Main Sari Raina.”

Tragically, Prabha Atre passed away from a cardiac arrest while sleeping at her Pune home. Rushed to Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital, she was declared dead.

Given that her close family members reside abroad, the final rites will occur after their arrival. Despite her dedication to her craft, she was scheduled to perform at the Swaprabha program on the Saturday following her passing.
