Darius Rucker, a famous singer and songwriter, was born and raised in the charming city of Charleston, South Carolina. He was born on May 13th, 1966, and is presently 57 years old, as of 2023. Rucker grew up in a single-parent household, alongside his three sisters and two brothers, with his mother, Carolyn, who worked as a nurse at the Medical University of South Carolina, shouldering the responsibility of raising them. Rucker’s father was absent from his life, and he only got to see him briefly before church on Sundays. His father was a part of a gospel band called The Traveling Echoes.

Rucker has often mentioned that he had a typical Southern African-American upbringing. His family attended church every Sunday, and they were economically poor. At one point, his mother, along with her two sisters, his grandmother, and 14 children, were all living under one roof in a three-bedroom house. Despite the financial struggles, Rucker cherishes his childhood memories.

Rucker’s sister, L’Corine, recalls that singing was always his dream. Sadly, Rucker’s mother passed away in November 1992 due to a heart attack. The Hootie song “Where Were You” is about Rucker’s complicated relationship with his father and was only released in Europe, where Rucker believed that his father would be less likely to hear it.
