“The Jasper Curling Club is saddened to announce the passing of local curling legend, Wally Kortzman. Wally, who was our ice maker for 27 years passed away yesterday, he was 90 years old. Wally was beyond dedicated to our club. He spent countless hours preparing and maintaining the ice, often dropping in to check on it a few times a day. Our curling club’s ice was the envy of clubs all over the province and we were lucky enough to host several high-profile events in the 1990’s due to the quality of Wally’s ice. Wally always came out and watched league play each night and spent many hours at the rink during bonspiel weekends making sure the ice was performing to his high standards. Several years ago, when our annual men’s bonspiel was going to be cancelled, Wally stepped up and helped financially support the event. The event has been known as the “Wally Kortzman Men’s Bonspiel” ever since. Wally retired from ice making at the end of the 2017 season and during his retirement party he was quoted as saying, “whenever I do something I try to do my best at it.” We are forever grateful for the years we were lucky enough to benefit from that. The Jasper curling community sends our condolences to Wally’s family and look forward to honouring him formally soon.”
