Wab was born on December 31, 1981, in Kenora, Ontario, Canada. He was brought up with his parents, Tobasonakwut Kinew and Dr. Kathi Avery Kinew.
His father “Tobasonakwut” was a former local and regional chief and also a professor of Indigenous governance at the University of Winnipeg, while his mother worked as a policy analyst.

During his childhood, he and his family moved to suburban Winnipeg. Wab attended Collège Béliveau, a school where he learned French, and spent his summers in Onigaming.
After completing his high school education, Wab graduated from the University of Winnipeg Collegiate, a prestigious private high school in Winnipeg. He mentioned in a 2014 interview that it was one of the best schools in the city.
Later, Kinew earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Manitoba. He continued his education by pursuing a master’s degree in Indigenous governance.
Wab Kinew’s parents valued education and wanted the same for him. He spent part of his growing-up years in a suburban neighborhood in southern Winnipeg and graduated from a private high school.
In college, Kinew studied economics and gained recognition at CBC, where he hosted shows like the national documentary series “8th Fire.” Later, he was hired by the University of Winnipeg as their first director of Indigenous inclusion.
Several political parties at the provincial and federal levels were interested in Kinew, but in 2016, he chose to run for the Manitoba New Democrats. Kinew mentioned in a 2016 social media post that the party’s then-leader, Greg Selinger, had been a teacher in the education program that Monkman’s mother had taken.
