Van Conner, Screaming Trees Co-Founder and Bassist, Dead at 55

Van Conner was a bassist and songwriter. He co-founded the grunge rock band screaming trees. He passed away at the age of 55 on 17 January 2023 from pneumonia.

His brother Gary Lee announced his death news on 18 January 2023 in a Facebook post by saying his brother died on Tuesday of an extended illness.

“It was pneumonia that got him in the end, he wrote. “He was one of the closest friends I ever had and I loved him immensely. I will miss him forever and ever and ever…”

Before announcing his death news, Gary updated his health condition on 5 January 2023 writing that Van Conner had been hospitalized with a liver infection. He was suffering from an array of health problems. His illness has plagued him since late 2021.

After going into a coma following emergency stomach surgery on Christmas 2021, he was unable to walk. He suffered from COVID during his recovery. There was a blood clot in his lungs that badly damaged the organ.

Gary Lee said,

“He has been confined to a hospital bed at home for several months and has not seemed to be making any progress towards recovery.”

He further added,

“Van had been avoiding getting the medical help he needs.”

He asked fans to send positive vibes or pray for him.

On 9 January 2023, Gary said,

“Van seems to be making progress, his liver is not completely shot but it was touching and go for a few days last week.”

Van Conner formed an American rock band “Screaming Trees” in Ellensburg, Washington in 1984 along with vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, and drummer Mark Pickerel.
