He won many awards” The Government of Nigeria awarded him the Commander of the Order of the Niger in 1979 and awarded the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR)in 2000″. Umaru Shehu passed away on 2 October 2023 at the age of 92.
He won President Goodluck Jonathan and presented him with the Centenary Award in 2014.
