The demonstrations started after body camera and security footage of five black Memphis Police Department officers beating Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old black man, was made public. The five policemen were fired and accused of second-degree murder.

Background
Tyre Nichols was stopped by five Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers on January 7, 2023, at about 8:21 p.m. CDT on suspicion of reckless driving at the Raines Road and Ross Road intersection. Nichols started complained of having trouble breathing as he started to run away from the car. Soon later, an ambulance was called. Nichols passed away three days later. Preliminary results from a private autopsy ordered by Nichols’ family on January 24 revealed that Nichols passed away as a result of “extensive bleeding induced by a severe beating.”

Death

On January 7, 2023, he was pulled over for dangerous driving, but he fled since he believed the people stopping him were gang members posing as police officials. Later, when they were arresting him, police fractured his neck with severe force when they were coughing him. He requested an ambulance after complaining of having trouble breathing. Three days later, he passed away at the hospital. On January 26, 2023, five officers Tadarrius Bean, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jsutin Smith, and Demetrius Haley were suspended after their arrests and subsequent charges of murder and other offences.
Criminal Charge
On January 7, District Attorney Steve Mulroy requested an investigation into claims of excessive force being used during the arrest by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The Memphis Police Department declared on January 15 that the concerned officers will be subject to administrative action. Additionally, an inquiry was launched by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Department of Justice.
