Tarek Fatah was born on 20 November 1949 in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. He was born in a Punjabi Muslim family who moved from Bombay to Karachi in 1947 after the Partition of India. He was well educated.
He graduated from the University of Karachi with a degree in biochemistry, but entered journalism in the 1970s as a reporter for the Karachi Sun, before becoming an investigative journalist for Pakistan Television.
He was a leftist student leader in the 1960s and 1970s and was jailed twice by the military regime. In 1977, he was accused of treason by the Zia-ul-Haq regime and banned from journalism. He left Pakistan and settled in Saudi Arabia in 1987 before moving to Canada.
