Dr. Sanduk Ruit is an ophthalmologist from Nepal who has been instrumental in restoring the sight of over 180,000 individuals across Africa and Asia. Additionally, he founded and serves as the Executive Director of Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, which produces top-notch intraocular lenses for surgery. Thanks to the low cost of these lenses, the institute has made cataract surgery accessible to some of the world’s poorest people.

Sanduk Ruit, born on September 4, 1954, hails from Olangchung Gola, Taplejung District, Nepal. As of 2023, he is 68 years old and comes under Virgo. His religious affiliation is unknown. He received his education from St. Robert’s School in Darjeeling.
Sanduk Ruit completed his high school education at Siddhartha Banasthali School in Kathmandu, Nepal. Later, he obtained his bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow.
After completing her bachelor’s degree, Sanduk Rut went on to pursue a master’s degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi. He has also studied in various countries including the United States, Australia, and the Netherlands.
After working as a General Physician at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu for 3 years, Sanduk Ruit spent 8 years at an eye hospital in Tripureshwar. It was during this time that he, along with Fred Hallows, developed the small incision cataract surgery technique, and he became the first Nepalese doctor to use an intraocular lens.
To make eye surgery more affordable and accessible in Nepal, Sanduk founded the Nepal Eye Program Australia, later renamed the Fred Hallows Foundation. In April 2021, he launched the Tej Kohli & Wright Foundation. The foundation organized its first microsurgical outreach camp in March 2021 in the Lumbini region of Nepal.
In 2010, Sanduk Ruit’s work in Nepal was featured in the BBC documentary series Human Planet. His biography, The Barefoot Surgeon, was published in June 2018.
Ruitt has received several honors for his humanitarian work. He was appointed an Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia in May 2007 and received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding in June 2006.
He was named the Asian of the Year 2007 in New Delhi by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare. Delhi on 5 March 2007. He also received Thailand’s Prince Mahidol Award and Asia Game Changer Award from Asia Society on 27 October 2016.

His father was a small-time businessman. He had five siblings but sadly three of them died. His elder brother died of diarrhea at age 3, his younger sister Chundak died of fever at age 8, and his younger sister Yangla died of tuberculosis at age 15.
