Paul Whelan Wiki:- Paul Whelan, who is also known as Paul Nicholas Whelan, is a former United States Marine Corps (USMC), with U.S., Irish British, and Canadian citizenship.
Whelan was arrested in Russia on 28 December 2018 of accused of spying. On 15 June 2020, Paul received a 16-year prison sentence.
At a news conference on Thursday, 8 December 2022, American President Biden said that the US government will “never give up” on securing Mr. Whelan’s release.

Paul Nicholas is a citizen of 4 countries – the US, the UK, Canada, and the Irish Republic. Military records show Paul joined the US Marine Reserves in 1994, about 6 years after he had reportedly started work as a police officer in Michigan.
Mr. Whelan left the company in 2016, moving to become director of global security for the United States-based automotive components supplier BorgWarner. He was “responsible for overseeing security” at aptitude in Michigan and around the world.

Since his first visit in 2006, Paul made a number of trips to Russia and developed an in-depth knowledge of the country. It was due to his understanding of Russia that he had been asked to attend the wedding of a fellow former marine in Moscow in December 2018.
On 28 December, however, Paul was arrested by Russia’s FSB state security agency, which stated that he had been “caught spying” in Moscow.
At the time, there were unjustified reports he had been caught receiving a digital storage device carrying a list of intelligence officials.

Paul Whelan’s Conviction and Sentencing
On 15 June 2020, Paul was convicted and sentenced to 16 years in a Russian prison for surveillance in a court in Moscow. His attorney said they believed Russia would now looking for a prisoner swap.
Whelan is currently held in a high-security prison, IK-17, which is 8 hour drive southeast of Moscow.
