The state government on Tuesday appointed retired IAS officer P.S. Vastrad as the administrator of SJM Vidya Peetha, which runs the Muruga Math Trust and educational institutions in Chitradurga. The appointment was requested by community leaders and Veerashaiva Lingayat members since the mutt’s seer, Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, has been detained since September 1 on charges of sexually assaulting young girls in accordance with the terms of the PoCSO Act.
On the advice of the Advocate-General and a report from the Deputy Commissioner of Chitradurga, the State government decided to appoint the administrator to the mutt and the education organisation. The government had requested a report from the Deputy Commissioner on November 4 following the Advocate-recommendation General’s that an administrator can be appointed under Article 162 of the Constitution for safeguarding the trust property and ensuring proper operation of the educational institutions.
On November 10, the deputy commissioner presented the report to the government, noting that because the seer was being held in detention, it had become challenging to guarantee the smooth operation of the educational institutes and the mutt. The Deputy Commissioner had stated in the report that the appointment of an administrator was required to prevent any anomalies in the operation of the mutt, educational institutions, as well as to prevent any negative impact on the public interest.
As a result, the State government announced on Tuesday that P.S. Vastrad had been appointed administrator with immediate effect. T.C. Kanthraj, Deputy Secretary to Government, Revenue Department, has signed the directive on the governor’s behalf.
