Don Gaetz, a future famous local politician, and Victoria (née Quertermous) Gaetz welcomed Matthew Louis Gaetz II into the world on May 7, 1982 in Hollywood, Florida. Gaetz worked at the Fort Walton Beach office of the legal firm Keefe, Anchors & Gordon after earning his law degree from William & Mary. Due to outstanding fees, the Florida bar barred Gaetz from practising law in October 2021.

The son of well-known Florida politician Don Gaetz, Matt was reared in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. He briefly practised law after earning his law degree before deciding to run for state representative. Matt served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2010-16. His support of Florida’s divisive “stand-your-ground statute” attracted a lot of media attention. He was originally chosen to serve in the US House of Representatives in 2016 and was later elected again in 2018, 2020, and 2022.

Career
After Republican Ray Sansom resigned in February 2010 amid charges of corruption, Matt ran in the special election in March 2010 to succeed Sansom in the 4th district, which included southern Santa Rosa County and Okaloosa. Gaetz won the Republican primary against Craig Barker, Kabe Woods, Jerry G. Melvin, and Bill Garvie with 43% of the vote. Matt defeated Jan Fernald, the Democratic candidate, in the extraordinary general election with 66 percent of the vote.

Gaetz announced his engagement to Ginger Luckey, sister of Palmer, the man behind Oculus VR and a significant Republican fundraiser, in December 2020. They were married in August 2021.
