‘Life isn’t only nice things’ – Spain coach Luis Enrique discusses loss of daughter Xana

Spain coach Luis Enrique has spoken about his life since the tragic passing of his daughter Xana on what would have been her 13th birthday.

On Sunday morning, the 52-year-old posted a special birthday message in a video on his Instagram account, which was filmed during his morning bike ride in Qatar.

“Today, not only are we playing Germany,” he said. “Today is also a very special day because Xanita would have turned 13 years of age. Amore, wherever you are, lots of kisses, have a great day and we love you.”

And after Spain’s 1-1 draw with Germany later on Sunday, Luis Enrique was asked about Xana – who passed away from bone cancer in 2019 – in his post-match press conference.

“It has been a special day for me, without a doubt, and for my family,” the former Barcelona coach said.

“But for a long time we have thought about living this naturally and it is evident that we do not physically have our daughter but we keep her in mind every day.

“We remember a lot about her, we laugh and think about how she would react in each situation in the many things that happen to us, and nothing else, that’s how life works, it’s not just nice things and trying to find happiness, but also managing these moments.”
