Tory ran for mayor of Toronto in the 2003 municipal election after working as a lawyer, political advisor, and businessman. He was defeated by David Miller.

He attended the University of Toronto Schools, a secondary school that was once supported by the government and connected to the University of Toronto. He attended the University of Toronto Schools in the same manner as his father and grandfather.
In 1975, he graduated from the University of Toronto’s Trinity College with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He then attended at York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1978. He got a call to the bar in 1980. He belongs to the United Church of Canada.

Michael and Jeffrey are Tory’s two brothers, and Jennifer is his sister. James Tory, a member of Tory’s family, served in the 71st Scottish Regiment. During the American Revolution, he was taken prisoner of war and kept there.
In the 1780s, he relocated to Nova Scotia. A Russian Jewish family that had emigrated to Canada six years earlier and had established in Toronto gave birth to Helen Yvonne Solomon, his maternal grandmother, in 1909, and she was born in Toronto.

When both John Tory and Barbara Hackett were York University students in 1976, they first met. In 1978, they got hitched. The politician spoke about their initial encounter in an interview with Narcity Toronto, stating: “We sat next to one other in a York University class 44 years ago just by happenstance.
We had each brought our individual lover and girlfriend to the lesson. When they first met, Tory had “length, red hair,” according to Hackett. When asked who first approached him, the mayor of Toronto admitted that it was his wife: “Barb literally invited me out to go for a pint at the grad bar.”
