Jesse Powell death and obituary, Singer-songwriter dies at 51

Jesse Powell, best known for the late ’90s hit “You,” has died, his family said in a statement. He is 51 years old.

The artist, hailed by many as an R&B icon, is said to be “sleeping peacefully” at his Los Angeles home. Powell’s family has not released details about the circumstances of his death.

His sister Tamara Powell, a Grammy-winning actress who, along with brother Trina Powell, first received recognition from contemporary R&B duo Trina & Tamara, made the announcement in an Instagram post shared Tuesday night. Her post included a statement from the Powell family.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother and uncle Jesse Powell. He passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles,” the statement said.

“The family asks for privacy at this time as we mourn this great loss and celebrate his lasting legacy,” it said. “Jesse loves music and he especially enjoys supporting his fans throughout his career. We want you all to know that you mean the world to him.”

About an hour later, Tamara Powell shared a second post, confirming her brother’s age at the time of his death. The third post contains footage of Jesse Powell’s performance.

“This voice!” she wrote. “In addition to being one of the best male R&B singers, you’re the best big brother ever. … We absolutely adore you, Jett, and our family wouldn’t be the same without you.”

Born in Gary, Indiana in 1971, Jesse Powell rose to fame in the early ’90s, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1996. His R&B ballad “You” became a hit when it was released, which was originally released on his debut album and re-released as a single in 1999. The single peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and appeared on Powell’s second album, “Bout It.”
