A prominent HIV/AIDS activist Hydeia Braodbent has died at the age of 39. Her demise news was confirmed by her father Loren Broadbent in a message posted to Facebook on 20 February 2024. However, her cause of death has not been revealed yet.
“With great sadness, I must inform you all that our beloved friend, mentor, and daughter Hydeia, passed away today after living with Aids since birth. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout her life, Hydeia remained determined to spread hope and positivity through education around Hiv/AIDS.”

Hydeia Broadbent was born in 1984 with H.I.V. That’s why as a child she started raising awareness about the virus and AIDS. She passed away at her home on 20 February 2024 at her home in Las Vegas at the age of 39.
She started sharing her struggles with H.I.V. at the age of 6 on television programs to educate the public amid an epidemic to produced panic and stigma around AIDS.
In 1992, Hydeia Broadbent was interviewed at the age of 7 opposite Magic Johnson who became a familiar face in the fight against H.I.V. and AIDS after his H.I.V. diagnosis. Hydeia told Magic Johnson,
“I want people to know that we’re just normal people.”
Magic reassured her, saying
“We are normal people.”

In 2006, Hydeia Broadbent told The New York Times about the interview with Magic Johnson,
“I think it just opened a lot of people’s eyes that H.I.V. can happen to anybody, with me being so young.”
At the age of 11, Hydeia Broadbent appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show where she talked about the myriad health issues. By the age of 12, she had shared her story with national television audiences.

Hydeia Braodbent was born on 14 June 1984 as Hydeia Loren Braodbent with undiagnosed HIV at a hospital in Las Vegas but her biological parents’ identity has not been revealed yet.
She was abandoned at the time of birth and was taken in as a foster child initially by Loren and Patricia Broadbent who adopted her. She was raised by Loren Broadbent (Father) and Patricia Broadbent (Mother).

In 1987, Loren and Patricia Broadbent knew that their adopted daughter Hydeia was HIV positive.
in 1987, Hydeia’s biological mother gave birth to another child at the same hospital where she left her first child Hydeia. That time, Hydeia’s birth mother and her second child were tested and it was found that both were HIV positive.
The hospital told Loren and Patricia Broadbent that Hydeia was tested and she also found HIV tested.
Hydeia’s adoptive mother Patricia Broadbent signed her up for a research trial to find a treatment but nothing worked. As Hydeia grew up, she had blood infections, pneumonia, and fungal infections in her brain.
It was also predicted at that time that she would not survive childhood and maybe, she would die at the age of 5. However, she lived her life till the age of 39. She also developed AIDS at the age of 5.
Hydeia’s learning was affected from attending Odyssey High School until the 7th grade.
Hydeia Broadbent’s mother Patricia said,
“My daughter didn’t have a formal education because of her illness. My priority was not school, but keeping her healthy for the time she had.”
Hydeia Broadbent had two siblings Briana and Patricia. From a young age, they navigated living with HIV/AIDS finding strength in each other’s presence and understanding.
