She has ancestral connections to Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Porou, Te Āti Awa, and Ngāi Tahu. Hana-Rawhiti Kareariki Maipi-Clarke’s father’s name is Potaka Maipi who is the broadcaster Potaka Maipi, and she is the grand-niece of Hana Te Hemara, a Māori language activist.

Taitimu Maipi, her grandfather, played a role in activism that led to the removal of the Captain Hamilton statue in 2020. Additionally, her great-great-great-great-grandfather is Wi Katene, the first Māori MP appointed to the Executive Council.

For her education, Maipi-Clarke attended Te Wharekura o Rākaumangamanga in Huntly. Remarkably, at the age of 17, she authored a book titled “Maahina” focusing on maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar.

Her inspiration for the book came from Rangi Mātāmua’s lectures on Matariki. In 2023, she conducted a training course for the New Zealand Warriors about maramataka and Matariki.
