Special Representative of His Majesty the King, and Chairman of the Isa Award for Service to Humanity, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Mubarak Al Khalifa said,

“The Nepali ophthalmologist, Dr Sanduk Ruit, was recognized for his service to the community and professional achievements with this award for 2021-2022.”

The Biennial Award will be presented at the ISA Cultural Centre in Manama next month. Dr Sanduk Ruit will receive a gold medal and a US$1 million cash prize and a certificate of merit.

For this award, there were 139 candidates from all over the world. Sheikh said,

“There were 139 candidates for the award from all over the world, and the Board of Trustees worked tirelessly with the award secretariat and the arbitration committee, which was made up of international personalities with expertise and scholarly, legal, and academic competence in research and investigation, to determine who would receive the award based on their humanitarian work. The board of trustees for the award assessed the work of the five applicants and determined that a fieldwork team would visit and investigate the achievements of the candidates in accordance with the award’s regulations and the procedures followed.”

Dr Sanduk Ruit was born on 4 September 1954 in Olangchung Gola, Taplejung District, Nepal. He is 68 years old as of 2023. His zodiac sign is Virgo. His religion is not known. He attended St Robert’s School in Darjeeling.

He completed his high school study at Siddartha Vanasthali School in Kathmandu, Nepal. He completed his bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow.

He along with Hollows created the Small Incision Cataract surgery and he became the first Nepali doctor to use intraocular lenses.

Sanduk established Nepal Eye Program Australia to gain donations to make eye surgeries more affordable and accessible in Nepal.

Later he renamed The Fred Hollows Foundation. He launched the Tej Kohli & Ruit Foundation in April 2021. This foundation conducted in March 2021 its first microsurgical outreach camp in the Lumbini region of Nepal.

His work in Nepal was featured in Mountiains-Life in Thin Air of the 2010 BBC documentary series Human Planet.

His biography The Barefoot Surgeon was published in June 2018.

He was hired as an Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia in May 2007 for service to humanity. He was rewarded with the Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding in June 2006.

He was honored Aian of the Year 2007 by the Union Minister of Health and family welfare Dr. Anbuamani Ramadoss in New Delhi on 5 March 2007.

He was also honored with the Prince Mahidol Award of Thailand. He got the Asia Game Changer Award on 27 October 2016 from the Asia Society.

He was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2018.
