Dr Matthew Lani Wiki – Dr. Matthew Lani is a so-called TikTok doctor who has been impersonating a doctor while claiming to have studied medicine at a university. He has also been caught wearing scrubs at a public hospital in Gauteng, according to reports.
The university has requested that “Dr. Matthew Lani” withdraw all references linking him to the institution.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he attended Wits between 2014 and 2021 to study medicine (MBBS).
He gained popularity in recent months by offering medical advice on TikTok and other social media platforms. He has also made appearances as a purported medical expert on a number of radio stations, television programs, and podcasts, always sporting his trusty stethoscope to serve as a constant reminder that he is not, in fact, a medical doctor.
However, the inquisitiveness of social media sleuths ultimately led to his downfall as doubts were cast on his claims of having skipped several school grades, earning a medical degree from Wits in just five years, and having a work history that did not match his claimed age.
Multiple inquiries were made to Wits and the HPCSA as a result, but “the doctor” insisted that he was the real deal and would not offer any supporting documentation, saying that he “doesn’t owe anyone a practice number.”
HPCSA spokesperson Christopher Tsatsawane responded in the negative when asked if a legitimate doctor could withhold their practice number, as Dr. Matthew has done in some of his videos.
