Peggy Ann Freeman aka Donyale Luna was a well-known figure and she was recognized as an American model and actress. She gained fame in Western Europe during the late 1960s.
She was also considered as “the first Black Supermodel. In March 1966, Donyale got the limelight after she starred on the cover of the British edition of Vogue.
She worked extensively in the modeling industry and made several underground films, such as Andy Warhol’s Screen Test (1966), and played roles in Qui ets-vous, Polly Maguire? (1966).
Luna also starred in mainstream Hollywood and world cinema, notably, as Anotia in Federico Fellini’s 1969 film Fellini’s Satyricon, as well as “God’s Mistress” in Otto Preminger’s Skidoo (1968).

Donyale Luna was born to Nathaniel A. Freeman (father) and her mother was Peggy Freeman. Her childhood dream was that she wanted to become a supermodel and she worked very hard and achieved her dream.
She was very close to her mother and her parents always encouraged her from behind and never let her down.
Donyale Luna began his career in 1963 when a British photographer discovered her and the photographer’s name was David McCabe, who was widely known for photographing Andy Warhol.
David McCabe invited her to New York City to photograph her and Luna’s connection to the English photographer led to her getting contracts with Harper’s Bazaar editor Nancy White and renowned photographer Richard Avedon.
She first appeared as a model and had her first shoot for Mademoiselle with filmmaker Woody Allen.
As we mentioned above Donyale Luna became the first Black woman who appeared on the covers of the March issue of British Vogue.

In June 1966, she worked with Detroit models and appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK.
