Delwar Hossain Sayeedi Wiki – Delwar Hossain Sayeedi was a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, politician, lecturer, and top leader of Jamaat-e-Islami. He served as the Member of Parliament from 1996 to 2006 representing the Pirojpur-1, Barisal constituency.
He was arrested in 2010 on false charges of hurting religious sentiments, and then in February 2013 was charged by the International Criminal Tribunal for Bangladesh after being found guilty of eight out of twenty alleged charges in relation to the Bangladesh Liberation War and was sentenced to death.
His alleged crimes included passing secret information to the Pakistani military, rape, arson, and looting.
In September 2014, the Supreme Court commuted his sentence to life imprisonment. Many international observers condemned the verdict, calling the charges politically motivated and a case of mistaken identity. His trial was criticized by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.
