Career
Chalapathi Rao was born in the Krishna village of Balliparru in 1944. He purportedly started his Telugu film career with the assistance of veteran actor Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao. He has appeared in three generations of renowned Nandamuri actors, including NT Rama Rao, Balakrishna, and Jr. NTR. He appeared alongside Krishna and Jayalalitha for the first time in the 1966 movie Gudachari 116. Over the course of six decades, he appeared in more than 600 films and produced a few, including Jagannatakam and Kaliyuga Krishnudu.
Education
Chalapathi Rao earned a B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology and an M.Sc. from Osmania University in Hyderabad in 1991. Osmania University and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Chalapathi Rao married Indumaty, his wife and the mother of his three children. Indumaty was married to the late actor Chalapathi Rao, who played many roles in Telugu movies. Indumaty avoided the spotlight despite being the wife of a well-known Tollywood celebrity.

On December 24, 2022, Rao suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 78.
