Who are Audrii Cunningham’s Parents?

Audrii Cunningham was an 11-year-old girl who was found in the Trinity River on 20 February 2024 after disappearing while on her way to school in Texas.

Audrii’s body was found at the Trinity River under US Highway 29. Her body was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Harris County. The officials were awaiting information on her cause of death.

Polk County District Attorney Shelly Sitton revealed that the officials are in the process of preparing arrest warrants for Don Steven McDougal who is 42 years old.

Shelly Sitton said,

“Based on all of the evidence that law enforcement has collected, they are in the process of preparing the appropriate arrest warrants. At this time, we believe the appropriate arrest warrant is going to be for capital murder in the death of Audrii Cunningham. He is still in jail under an unrelated felony charge.”

When Sitton was asked how Audrii was killed then Sitton replied,

“I cannot speak to that.”

Audrii Cunningham’s father’s friend Don Steven McDougal gave investigators a list of places where he went but didn’t mention where Audrii’s body was found. Authorities used cell phone data and video to help find Audrii’s remains.

Don Steven was in custody after he got arrested on 19 February 2024 in the night on unrelated aggravated assault charges.

Audrii Cunningham was born in 2012 and was killed at the age of 11. She was born to Joshua Cunningham (Father) and Cassie Matthews (Mother) in Livingston, Texas. Her parents are divorced parents. Audrii lived with her father while her mother lived elsewhere. Audrii used to share her home with her grandmother.

On 15 February 2024, Cassie got a call from Audrii’s school saying that Audrii never showed up. Cassie informed Audrii’s father and grandmother who used to live with Audrii in Livingston. Audrii’s father and grandmother reported their daughter Audrii’s missing to the police. Cassie drove to Livingston as soon as she could and started the search for her daughter.

Audrii Cunningham’s father has not spoken anything to the media but he has been cooperating with the authorities and participating in the search for his aughter.

Audrii’s father dropped off Audrii at her bus stop around 7 am on 15 February. At that time, Audrii was carrying a bright red “Hello Kitty” backpack. Joshua told to the authorities that he didn’t see her get on the bus but he assumed that she would get the bus. He got the call from her school around 5:30 pm saying that Audrii never arrived at the school.

Joshua searched the area around his home and a state park thinking that Audrii might have wandered off into the woods. He checked his daughter’s friends and neighbors but didn’t find her.

Audrii Cunningham had two younger siblings, a brother, and a sister. Her grandmother was very close to her and often she used to take her to school and pick her up.

Audrii’s brother and sister are 8 and 6 years old respectively.

Audrii’s father’s friend Don Steven McDougal was arrested on 16 February 2024 on an unrelated charge of aggravated assault. Don had been staying on Audrii’s property and providing occasional childcare services for her. Cassie said that she didn’t know Don well and she didn’t trust him. She warned Audrii’s father about Don Steven and that she didn’t want him around Audrii.

Cassie told the authorities that Don Steven knew something about Audrii Cunningham’s disappearance and he was not telling the truth.

Audrri’s backpack was found near the Lake Livingston Dam on 16 February 2024. Her dead body was found on 20 February 2024 on the Trinity River near National Highway 59.

Don Steven McDougal was in custody on a separate felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On the day of Aurdrii’s disappearance, Neither Audrii got the bus nor reached her school.

Don Steven McDougal is being held at the Polk County jail on a $500k bond.
