In May 1992, Shue was cast as Billy Campbell in the Aaron Spelling soap opera Melrose Place. He acted in a film alongside Courtney Thorne Smith, who he later dated.

Shue remained a cast member for six years. During this period, he made an appearance as a violent spouse in the Matt Damon and Claire Danes film The Rainmaker.

Shue and former SportsCenter anchor Charley Steiner are traded in a 1996 ESPN commercial for SportsCenter, with Steiner taking over SportsCenter while Shue takes over Melrose Place.

He worked on the 2007 movie Gracie alongside his sister Elisabeth, brother John, and brother-in-law, Davis Guggenheim, who received an Oscar for directing An Inconvenient Truth.
