Ajit Krishnan

Ajit Krishnan was born on 19 April 1982 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and embarked on his journey with the Indian Air Force after graduating from the NDA. He is the recipient of the President’s Gold Medal and the Sword of Honour at the Air Force Academy. He started his career as the IAF’s fighter stream on 21 June 2003.

His span as a flying instructor and test pilot is marked by an impressive accumulation of approximately 2900 hours of flying experience. He has flown the advanced Su-30 MKI, the venerable MiG-21 and MiG-29, the versatile Jaguar, the Dornier, and An-32 among others. He studied at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington.

Ajit Krishnan Career

As Ajit Krishnan passed out from high school, he joined the National Defence Academy where he displayed his academic and athletic prowess and won the President’s Gold Medal for placing 1st overall in the order of merit. He was awarded with the Sword of Honour for being the most excellent cadet overall.

Ajit Krishnan completed his NDA training in 2001 and was commissioned to the Indian Air Force fighter stream. He got the training at the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad where he flew a variety of aircraft.

For his flying abilities, he was selected for the IAF’s highly sought-after and difficult test pilot position.

Ajit Krishnan attended the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington where he excelled in his managerial and leadership abilities.

He returned back to India in March 2020 and resumed his training at the ISRO facility in Bengaluru. Later he went to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram where he spoke to scientists who are involved in the Gaganyaan mission.

Ajit Krishnan participated in many programs there such as the environmental control and life support system, the crew escape system, the crew module, and the service module.

On 27 February 2024, PM Narendra Modi granted him astronaut wings during a ceremony held at the VSSC.
