According to a death notice, Mr. Prendergast was surrounded by family when he breathed his last at Southland Hospital last Thursday. His family and well-wishers who were present with him in his final moments were devastated to learn about the news. After the news broke online, Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich paid tribute to Mr. Prendergast. He said that Maurice was a long-serving City Councillor, board member, and deputy mayor.

It was further added that he was a fierce advocate for his community and he never shied away from sharing his views or holding the DCC to account even after stepping back from his duties. Adding further, Radich said that his contribution to our city spanned 18 years and it is only right they acknowledge his public service. “On behalf of the Dunedin City Council, I pass on our condolences to Mr. Prendergast’s family”, said Mayor Jules Radich further.
