Who Was Constantine II?
Constantine’s nine-year rule fell during one of the most difficult times in the nation’s political history. After his father passed away in 1964, Constantine II, the only child of King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece, took the throne. However, his reign was marked by political unrest, which culminated in a military takeover on April 21, 1967. A few months later, after conducting a failed countercoup against the ruling military junta, he was forced to leave the country.
He stayed in Rome up until 1973 when the junta overthrew the monarchy. Constantine, a member of the Glücksburg royal dynasty of Denmark, was William, prince of Wales’ godfather and the second cousin of King Charles III of Great Britain. At the age of 23, he succeeded to the throne in 1964, shortly after taking home the gold medal in sailing at the Olympics. But due to his disagreements with George Papandreou’s elected government, he quickly lost support.
Following the “royal coup” in 1965, when the government was overthrown, Constantine nominated consecutive administrations that received little popular support. In 1967, a military junta was established as a result of this era of political unrest.
