We are saddened to report the unfortunate passing of MP Santokh Singh. He was a Congress member of Parliament (MP) from Jalandhar. It is reported that Mr. Santokh was taking part in the Bharat Jodo Yatra and was among the senior leaders who gave Rahul Gandhi a rousing welcome as he entered the Jalandhar district in the morning. Reports confirm that he died on Sunday, January 15, 2023, and left his family and all his loved ones and well-wishers in profound grief and sorrow. According to reports, Santokh Singh suffered cardiac arrest at the age of 76. As mentioned, the saddening incident happened when he was taking part in party leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra between Phillaur and Goraya towns on a chilly Saturday morning. Gandhi was walking alongside Chaudhary when he fell, forcing the suspension of the yatra. The yatra started at 7 am from Phillaur, and the incident happened at 8:45 am on National Highway 44. For the day, the yatra was put on hold.

Gandhi expressed astonishment at the abrupt passing of the two-term party member of parliament and called him a dedicated leader and a stalwart of the Congress. “Shocked by Shri Santokh Singh Choudhary’s untimely death. He was a good man, a down-to-earth, hard-working leader who dedicated his life to public service from his time in youth Congress to his time as a Member of Parliament. According to a Congress worker present at the scene, Chaudhary, the MP from Jalandhar, delivered a speech for around four minutes amid raucous Bharat Jodo applauding Gandhi. He then walked a few kilometres with Gandhi before hurriedly moving on to the next location in a vehicle. Vikramjit Singh, Chaudhary’s son, followed Gandhi as Chaudhary himself went to the next location where he had gathered people of all religions to receive Gandhi.

According to the Congress employee, Chaudhary went ahead to make sure everything was in order. The yatra arrived at the Phillaur leprosy ashram at about 8.30 AM when Chaudhary allegedly arranged a meeting between Gandhi and the residents of the ashram. He was close to Gandhi while they were both strolling. Before collapsing, he even asked about the well-being of Tamil Nadu MP Jyothimani. According to some eyewitnesses, the MP fell because of the rush. May his soul rest in peace!
