While the two were vacationing at Venus Bay in May of last year, police believe that the 44-year-old murdered 64-year-old Peter Hillier and then requested an ambulance for him the following day. At the time, police said that Mr. Bennett had informed them that Mr. Hillier had been hurt on May 28 after falling from their shared RV between Streaky Bay and Venus Bay, where they had been fishing, while intoxicated.

He claimed that after finding him immobile the following day, he then dialed an ambulance. While Mr. Bennett had been gone since 2020, Mr. Hillier had been reported missing by his niece one week earlier. Police claim that Mr. Hillier was “viciously” beaten so severely that it would not have been able for him to survive the injuries when they found what they suspect to be the murder weapon in June behind Dusty’s Art Gallery in Poochera.
Detective Superintendent Des Bray stated there was no evidence to suggest the two had traveled to Streaky Bay at all and that it was obvious Mr. Hillier had been deceased for a while before his acquaintance called the police. On the Central Coast of New South Wales, both men were natives of Lake Haven.
