Datuk Seri Peter Kong, a well-known businessman from Labuan and the creator of the Ro-Ro boat service, passed away this morning at the Labuan Nucleus Hospital. He was 65. Following the announcement of the news, tributes poured in for him as no one seemed to believe the fact that he passed away. His well-wishers and loved ones mourned his death and prayed for the peace of his soul. Besides, everyone is also searching for his cause of death and what happened to him. Peter died around 12:40 p.m., according to his sister Rozi Kong, of an infection. He has three sons, one of whom is a physician. After funeral rites on Wednesday (Feb. 1) at 2 p.m., Peter’s bones will be interred at the Buddhist cemetery close to Taman Fulliwa, according to his sister Angela Kong. Tomorrow afternoon, Peter’s remains would arrive at his son’s home in Taman Fulliwa, she said. The most significant roll-on-roll off (ro-ro) boat service that served the Labuan-Menumbok-Labuan route for more than ten years was pioneered by Peter, a well-known businessman on this duty-free island.

What Was Peter Kong Cause Of Death?
He was one of the founding members of the MCA in Labuan and later rose to the position of Labuan MCA youth leader (in the 1990s). He then joined the Sabah-based party UPKO as Labuan UPKO advisor (2017), before joining Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (as deputy president [Chinese quota]), where he was well known for his advocacy on a number of public issues. The oldest hotel in Labuan, Waterfront Hotel, was purchased by Peter and renamed Billion Waterfront Resort after prominent businessman Tan Sri Chua Ma Yu’s family.
He was the nicest businessman to journalists in Labuan and Sabah, and he regularly hosted reporters whenever they had missions to cover news on the island. As mentioned, he was one of the founding members of the MCA in Labuan, rising to the position of Labuan MCA’s youth leader in the 1990s. In 2017, he joined the Sabah-based party Upko as the party’s Labuan adviser before joining Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah as the party’s deputy president.
