Blue was born on 28 July 1949 in Mansfield, Louisiana. He attended DeSoto High School. He was an All-State pitcher in high school and was signed by the Kansas City Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1967. He made his MLB debut with the Athletics in 1969 and quickly established himself as one of the game’s premier pitchers. Blue had a dominant fastball and a devastating curveball, and he used both pitches to great effect throughout his career. He led the league in strikeouts three times and finished in the top five in ERA five times. He was also a five-time All-Star and won 20 games in a season twice.

He finished his career with a record of 209-161, a 3.27 ERA, and 2,175 strikeouts.
After retiring, Blue worked as a coach and mentor in various capacities, including serving as a special assistant to the commissioner of baseball.
