Early Life and Education

Of Irish, French-Canadian and African-American ancestry, Shermar is the son of Marilyn Wilson and Sherrod Moore. He lived with his mother who worked as a teacher in Denmark and Bahrain during Shermar’s first seven years of life. While in Bahrain, Shermar went to a British private school, and then in 1977 he and his mother returned to the USA, initially to Chico, California, but then moving to Palo Alto in the south of the state, where went to Gunn High School. After matriculation he enrolled at Santa Clara University, majoring in communications while also pursuing theater studies, and earning a minor from the theater arts subject.

Career Beginnings

After college, Shermar made an immediate breakthrough with the role of Malcolm Winters in the long-running TV drama series “The Young and the Restless”, portraying Malcolm from 1994 until 2004, while until 2014 he made further occasional appearances, eventually totaling 430 episodes. This particular role launched him to stardom and won him a number of prestigious awards, including a Daytime Emmy, and seven Image Awards. His film debut came in 1997 when he portrayed Chris in the comedy film “Have Plenty”, starring Christopher Scott Cherot and Chenoa Maxwell, and he continued with film roles, starring in the action thriller “Butter” in 1998, and having several other minor roles until he was selected for the part of Special Agent Derek Morgan in the TV crime-drama series “Criminal Minds” in 2005; he remained in the show until 2017, and appeared in 252 episodes of the Primetime-Emmy Award-nominated series. He earned another Image Award, while his net worth soared during those years.

Work Besides “Criminal Minds” and “Young and the Restless”

Derek hasn’t had prominent success apart from these two celebrated roles, generally appearing in minor film roles, but most recently he was cast in the lead role in the TV crime-action series “S.W.A.T”, as Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson, so far featuring in 17 episodes.

TV Host

Back in 1995, Shermar was selected as the host of the popular TV show “Soul Train”, which lasted until 2003, and has also guest hosted “The Talk”, and various annual award shows, such as “2001 Lady of Soul Awards” in 2001, and the “48th Annual Miss USA Pageant”.

Modeling Career

From the time when he was in college, Shermar took up modeling work, firstly to pay his bills and later as extra income. Gradually his modeling career began to develop, and he eventually signed a contract with the DNA Model Management in New York City. His most notable works as a model include an appearance in the Men’s Fitness magazine in March 2009. Shermar’s net worth also benefited from his modeling work.

Hopefully when you see the movie, Maybe you don’t have the Orlando in your life, but you know that guy. He goes to church. He’s down the street. He’s one of the boys at the schoolyard. They exist.
What I love about ‘Criminal Minds’ is that Morgan is an ex-marine, ex-SWAT. To do those things you have to be a pretty badass dude. It’s a great incentive to stay in shape.
Orlando’s a part of me. The next guy’s a part of me. And the next guy’s a part of me. That’s all I’m trying to do, is tell cool stories that people can relate to.
I know that on my own sites, a picture of me with my mom or me with my dog does well, but when I put up a picture of myself shirtless, it does get a little crazy.
But I got drafted out of high school, and my mother wasn’t having it. She was like, you’re not about to think that you can just play ball, because if you get hurt, you’re going to be out of luck.
Whether it’s because of how somebody looks or because of what they’re wearing, you kind of assess a person in the first five minutes before they even speak.
Acting is therapeutic. I say I’m not shy, but… Acting is a very vulnerable experience, and you’ve got to be really confident to put yourself out there to be judged.
There are days when I feel confident, and I feel like, ‘OK, this outfit looks nice, I look good, I’m in shape.’ But I’m never going to walk out the house trying to be sexy, because that to me is cheesy and not attractive.
Because I could throw so hard when I got to college, they made me a pitcher. If I had to it all over again, I would have stuck to playing in the outfield. I loved running. I can catch everything in the outfield. I could throw people out from the fence.
Well, you can’t compete with a six foot five man in a wig.
And a lesson in this movie is dig beneath the surface. And so with my words, with my character, I purposely created a character that was away from how you’ve known me thus far in my career.
I hosted Soul train but I listen to everything.
I got rock in me.
Kim Kardashian is a major player coming off of a reality show, and nobody can turn a blind eye to what she’s accomplished, no matter how you see her.
I’m a drama guy.
It’s no accident that I’m not married and don’t have kids yet.
I admire Brad Pitt, honestly, just because of how he started and the obstacles he had to overcome to have the career that he’s had.
I could run, but I was throwing 93 mph coming out of high school.
Each morning needs to start with a good sweat. I’m either working out at home or on set, depending on my call time.
I got country music in me.
I don’t want to be an old dad.
I like to make money; I like to have nice things. But I love to act; I love to tell stories.
Denzel has been that leading man, but it took him a while to get to Training Day and Hurricane Carter.
I always speak so highly of my mom because she’s my partner in crime, and none of this would be possible without her love and support. Always have to make time for Mom.
But there are still good shows like 24, Boomtown and the Wire, the Shield.
Now that I’ve established myself in a drama, I’m plugging away, trying to get the attention of people who do the independent movies and the features.
When I do tie the knot, it will be one time, for good.
It’s no accident that I’m not married and don’t have kids yet. Because, despite what I’ve achieved in my career, I’m always wondering when somebody’s gonna tap me on the shoulder and say, ‘OK, the gig is up.’
You know, I don’t play the race card a lot. I’m half-black, half-white, and I’m proud of – my skin is brown. The world sees me as a black man, but my mother didn’t raise me as a black man. She didn’t raise me as a white guy.
But because I could throw so hard when I got to college they made me a pitcher.
Acting is therapeutic.
I’m not saying that I am all of my characters, but for me to bring a character to life, you’ve got to be able to find your own truth.
Television is in a different time because of reality television, so it’s not as exciting.
I still have shy qualities but nobody would believe that, just because we’re in the forefront and I can talk a lot of mess and I can run my mouth.
I think because people are passing – people that we are aware of are passing at – I don’t say a great pace, but it seems like people are dropping, and I think it’s just making – there’s a consciousness and there’s sensitivity to it.
Baseball player. Yeah, that was my dream before acting, or alongside acting.
I don’t see myself as a ‘black actor,’ I’m just Shemar Moore the actor. I’m very proud to be black, but I’m just as much black as I am white.
After eight years on ‘Young and the Restless’ and eight years on ‘Criminal Minds,’ I’m ready for that next phase of my career.
I say I’m not shy, but… Acting is a very vulnerable experience, and you’ve got to be really confident to put yourself out there to be judged.
Let a woman have her place, because as you provide foundation for her, she provides a foundation for you. And through that vulnerability comes strength.
That’s because I didn’t have to work with Madea. I only had to work with Madea once, and that was at the barbecue and I didn’t have to get close to her.
I wanna chase down Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Will Smith. I would love to start my film career.
No week is ever the same in my world! An average week in my life changes based on my shooting schedule, if I’m promoting a project, or anything else I have going on.
It was truly a lesson in don’t take something at face value. You know, so many of us do in life. Whether it’s because of how somebody looks or because of what they’re wearing or what have you, you kind of assess a person in the first five minutes before they even speak.
I’m raised by a single mom and didn’t have pops around for the most part of my life. And she, by any means necessary, gave me the best opportunities that she knew how to give me.
We never get enough of falling in love and believing in love.
Celebrities have more influence to be able to reach out to people, but people are becoming famous on Facebook and social media every day.
I’m not a machine. I get really motivated, then I fall off the wagon and want to eat Chinese food and sit on my couch and gain five or 10 pounds!
I’m very proud to be black, but I’m just as much black as I am white. But I want tell stories that everybody can relate to, so I don’t care who’s opposite me.
I want a partner in crime and a Bonnie to my Clyde. I’ve just been so focused on my career. Women don’t like being number two, so I’ve been glad to keep my distance so I could focus on me, get my life together and take care of my mom without disappointing the woman I love.
I do like working out. I feel my best when I work out, but you know, I’m human. I like to ride my bicycle and lift weights and hike. When I am diligently working out, ideally, I like to work out four days a week. If I can do that, I feel good about myself.
Although I have a lot of close female friends in my life, my number one is still my mom. Without her, I wouldn’t have the values that I have and see the world the way that I do today. She taught me how to appreciate and respect women. She taught me chivalry and how to love a woman and respect their feelings and emotions.
I could describe my career in two words: who knew. I was on the path to becoming a professional baseball player, but I got injured in college. When I decided to move out to L.A. to try acting, nobody was betting on me, not even my family. But it’s always been that way for me; nothing has come easy.
