Who’s 2 Chainz?

Tauheed Epps was born on the 12th September 1977, in College Park, Georgia USA, and under his stage nickname 2 Chainz is a rapper, who is probably best recognized for being half of the hip hop duo Playaz Circle, alongside his friend Earl ‘Dolly Boy’ Conyers, and who have released the hit single “Duggle Bag Boy” through their friend Ludacris’ Disturbing Tha Peace label. 2 Chainz is also known for releasing solo studio albums such as “Based On A T.R.U. Story”, “B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time” and “Pretty Girls Like Trap Music”.

Early Life and Childhood

2 Chainz spent his childhood in his hometown, where he was always caught between being a good kid who was fulfilling his obligations, and growing up ‘on the streets’ where he was getting into all sorts of trouble. He went to North Clayton High School, and was actually one of the best pupils in his class. He started playing basketball for the school team, and became one of the best players too, however, that was the time when he was introduced to real ghetto and street life. He started using and dealing in marijuana, and when he was only 15 years old, he was arrested for carrying a large amount of cocaine. Nevertheless, he still had a scholarship to Alabama State University, where he continued to play basketball from 1995 to 1997, however, got into more trouble there, which he hasn’t spoken about, but had to transfer to Virginia State University, from which he graduated.

Career Beginnings

Speaking about his career, music was always his greatest passion, so he co-founded the hip hop duo Playaz Circle, alongside his friend Earl ‘Dolly Boy’ Conyers in 1997, and adopting the name ‘Tity Boi’. After the group released its debut independent album “United We Stand, United We Fall” in 2002, they were noticed by one of the most successful people in the industry at the time, Ludacris, who recorded several songs with the duo, including promoting their album on his own radio station.

Playaz Circle

The hip hop duo was soon signed by Ludacris’ Disturbing Tha Peace record label, which was widely popular around the globe, and through which they released their debut album “Supply & Demand” in October of 2007, with the hit single “Duffle Bag Boy” featuring Lil Wayne. The album peaked at No. 27 on the US Billboard 200 chart. Two years later out came their second studio album – “Flight 360: The Takeoff” – but in the following year Epps left to pursue a solo career.

Solo Career and Rise to Prominence

To talk about his career as a solo artist, he firstly changed his stage name to ‘2 Chainz’ as he was accused of offending women with his former name. He released his debut solo studio album “Based on a T.R.U. Story” in 2012, which proved to be a huge success as it topped the US Billboard 200 chart, and was certified platinum by the RIAA, adding a considerable amount to his net worth. Several noted musicians, producers and critics recognized his unique talent, and so he won three Grammy Award nominations and over 13 BET Hip Award nominations.

In the following year, he released his second studio album entitled “B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time”, on which he collaborated with such musicians as Pharell Williams, Lil Wayne, Drake and others – the album peaked at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart, as well as No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Moreover, his third studio album “ColleGrove” out came in 2016, reaching No. 4 on the US Billboard 200 chart, and then the album “Pretty Girls Like Trap Music” (2017), which achieved gold certification by the RIAA. His album “Rap Or Go To The League” is scheduled for a release late in 2018.

Mixtapes and EPs

2 Chainz has released ten mixtape – two of the most popular are “T.R.U. REALigion” (2011), which debuted at No. 58 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and “Daniel Son; Necklace Don” (2016). Speaking about his EPs, the first entitled “Freebase” was released in 2014, and two years later out came “Felt Like Cappin” and “Hibachi For Lunch”. Most recently, he released “The Play Don’t Care Who Makes It” (2018), which reached No. 58 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

The Real University

In addition, in 2015, 2 Chainz expanded his involvement in the music industry by establishing his own record label called The Real University, which is based in Atlanta, Georgia, starting by signing Cap.1 rapper, and releasing his album entitled “Bird Bath EP”.

1 I don’t care what anybody else is wearing. I feel like they’re all waiting to see what I have on. If you really want to know the truth, that’s what I think. They’re waiting to see what I’mma do next.
2 In my 8th grade yearbook picture I had on 2 chains.
3 You need to be your own individual.
4 Ludacris is a very smart individual. He’s about his business. Everything is business with him. So I learned a lot about making deals from him.
5 Hip-hop deals with bragging and braggadocio, being boastful. It’s always been about who’s got the most money.
6 You rarely get money out of labels, except for when they open up a budget for a project. Other than that, it’s a do-or-die type thing.
7 I like for people to have fun and that comes out in the music.
8 You know, my uncle wore a lot of jewelry, a lot of gold chains.
9 The independent route was the best move for me. But I think I’ve maximized everything I could do independently. I’ve done everything out the mixtape market. I think getting the big machine behind you is the next stage when you’ve maximized the independent level.
10 As I said, I spent most of my adult life thinking I didn’t have a vote, and therefore that what I thought didn’t matter.
11 I just be comfortable in my own skin; I might wear anything.
12 My pop did a little time.
13 I don’t have any reasons to be disrespectful or throw anybody under the bus.
14 I had incorrectly, for all of my adult life until 2008, believed the biggest voting myth that exists – that ex-felons cannot vote.
15 To me, I’m the epitome of what a ghetto child is: I was raised by a single parent; I stayed in apartments my whole life; I don’t think I’ve ever cut the grass.
16 I want to be a successful landlord. I like real estate.
17 I encourage everyone to pay attention to the issues that matter to you, from jobs and the economy, to education and our schools, to criminal justice reform. Whatever it is that you care about, make sure you use your voice.
18 I can say sincerely, don’t take your voice for granted. It is truly what makes us all equal.
19 My whole story is just about me having a second chance.
20 I wake up each and every day with a smile on my face knowing I get to do something musically.
21 I want to challenge myself, challenge my styles.
22 I enjoy being in control, having a lot of creative control.
