At age 79, Sister Rose Marie Kujawa passed away after serving as the previous president of Madonna University for 14 years.
Kujawa served as Madonna’s sixth president from 2001 to 2015. She passed away on Thursday, one month short of turning 80.
“Her legacy of exemplary scholarship, compassionate service, and dedication to Madonna’s mission and values will live on in all who were blessed to know her,” the university said in an announcement.
The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Central Chapel of the Felician Sisters in Livonia will host a wake for Kujawa on Monday, Jan. 2, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The visitation for Kujawa’s funeral is set to begin at 10 a.m. on January 3 at the Felician Sisters’ Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Central Chapel. Howe-Peterson Funeral Home is in charge of providing funeral services. Instead of flowers, the university requested contributions to the Felician Sisters Retirement Fund.
Kujawa was raised in Detroit and graduated from Wayne State University with a master’s and a bachelor’s degree, respectively. Later, she continued to teach at Madonna University (formerly Madonna College), where she also served as an academic dean and vice president before being elected president.
After leaving her post as president, Kujawa worked for Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron of the Archdiocese of Detroit as his delegate for consecrated life.
Over 30 nations were visited as a result of her work, and Pope Francis recognized Kujawa in 2021. She was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal for her contributions to the church and the papacy.

Rose Marie Kujawa was born and reared in Detroit, where she earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wayne State University. She afterwards continued to instruct at Madonna University (formerly Madonna College). Where she also held academic dean and vice president positions before being chosen as president.

It was during Sister’s tenure as academic dean and vice president, which spanned 17 years, that Madonna College became Madonna University.
The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, Orchard Lake Schools, Saints Cyril, Methodius Seminary, Marywood Nursing Care Center, Angela Hospice, and St. Mary Hospital were just a few of the board’s sisters served on over the years.

Sr. Rose made a lot of changes to Madonna University during her 14 years as president. Sr. Rose was motivated to act in the best interests of the Madonna students. She encouraged personal and spiritual growth by fostering an environment that was welcoming to professors, staff, and administration.
Rose oversaw the university’s acquisition of the property for the Outdoor Athletic Complex. She also gave her approval for the money needed to construct the concession stand, locker room, and three fields on that property. She also oversaw the school’s growth from seven teams to eleven.

The sixth of Francis and Anna (Rakoczy) Kujawa’s seven children, Jane was born in Detroit. Her siblings are Mary Lou Koziel, Helen Hampton+, Francis+, Laura Colasinski, Rosemarie+, Jane Sister Rose Marie), and John.
She was admitted to the Felician Congregation in 1960, given the name Sister Rose Marie, and made her final vows in 1968. After completing St. John Cantius Grade School and Felician Academy.
