A second journalist dies while covering the FIFA World Cup.
As he was covering the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, a second journalist passed away. Qatari photographer Khalid al-Misslam fell dead over the weekend “suddenly.”
“Al- Misslam, a Qatari, died suddenly while covering the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. We believe in Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for him, and send our deepest condolences to his family.”
The Qatar news outlet wrote:
Al-Misslam was a World Cup reporter for the Qatari news station Al Kass TV. The reasons of his death remain unknown, with the TV station just quickly noting his demise during their live show.
His passing occurs only a few days after renowned American soccer reporter Grant Wahl passed away in Qatar while covering the World Cup. Wahl was 48, who had previously worked for Sports Illustrated and had his own sports news subscription service, fell at Lusail Iconic Stadium and was taken to a local hospital before passing away. He was covering Argentina’s quarterfinal victory against the Netherlands.
It’s unknown whether he passed while at the hospital or while being transported. Eric, his brother, thinks the Qatari government may have been engaged in illegal activity. Wahl was originally denied entry to Ahmad bin Ali Stadium and held for 30 minutes because of wearing a jersey that featured a soccer ball encircled by a rainbow before the American team’s match against Wales.
Finally, he was permitted entry to the venue. Despite their initial pledges, the Qatari authorities clamped down on pro-LGBTQ protests throughout the competition. Along with wearing a jersey with a rainbow theme, Wahl has been a vocal opponent of the Qatari government and their World Cup hosting.

“They just don’t care. Qatari World Cup organisers don’t even hide their apathy over migrant worker deaths, including the most recent one,” in an article on his Substack.
He wrote on Friday:
Wahl Death
It has come to light that the day before he passed away, Wahl spoke on a podcast and alluded to feeling ill. Earlier this week, Wahl disclosed that he was experiencing throat discomfort and a lack of sleep, and that he had visited the medical center at the media center in Qatar twice.
“My body I think told me, even after the U.S. went out, ‘dude, you are not sleeping enough.’ It rebelled on me,”. “So I’ve had a case of bronchitis this week, I’ve been to the medical clinic at the media centre twice now, including today. I’m feeling better today I basically canceled everything on this Thursday that I had and napped. And I’m doing slightly better. I think you can probably tell in my voice that I’m not 100 per cent.”
Wahl said on his podcast:
“I am so thankful for the support of my husband @GrantWahl’s soccer family & of so many friends who’ve reached out tonight.“I’m in complete shock.”
His wife also posted a tweet following the news:

Wahl criticized both the event and the country’s human rights violations. His last published piece chastised the host country for disregarding estimates that up to 6000 employees perished during the tournament’s building projects. Many people at the event and throughout the globe were shocked by his demise.
