The police have named Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old transgender woman, and former Covenant School student, as the suspect in the shooting. Hale was fatally shot by the police after allegedly entering the school and opening fire on the victims. According to the Metro Nashville Police District, CCTV footage shows that the active shooter, Audrey Elizabeth Hale, arrived at Covenant Church/School in a Honda Fit and proceeded to shoot her way into the building. Hale was armed with two assault-type guns and a 9-millimeter pistol.

Authorities found plans and a statement explaining Hale’s plans inside her family home, indicating that the shooting was preplanned. Hale had drawn a map of the school, identified probable access points, and performed surveillance.
