Who is Joseph Gatto?

Born as Joseph Anthony Gatto Jr. on the 5th June 1976 in Staten Island, New York City, USA, and is a comedian, producer and writer, perhaps best known as a founder of The Tenderloins comedy troupe, but Gatto is also a member of the hidden camera-practical joke reality TV series called “Impractical Jokers” (2011- 2018).

Early Life, Nationality, Siblings, and Education

Of Italian ancestry, Joe wasn’t showing that comedy would be his career calling at an early age. He was focused on school, and was very good at math, so after successfully completing Monsignor Farrell High School, on his father’s suggestion, Joe enrolled at the LIU Post of Long Island University, from which he obtained a degree in accounting; it was his father who told him that “every company needs an accountant, and you can work anywhere”. His father Joseph Sr. passed away in 1995 from pancreatic cancer, leaving Joseph Jr. and two elder sisters.

Career Beginnings

Upon graduation, Joe found a job at a retail store that sells baby stuff; he held on to this job until 2011, but when his comedy career started to get going, he decided to focus entirely on that. It was back in 1999 that he had formed the improvisation and sketch comedy troupe The Tenderloins, alongside James “Murr” Murray, Brian “Q” Quinn, and Salvatore “Sal” Vulcano. In the next ten years, the quartet showcased their comedy skills in a number of competitions, including the NBC’s “It’s Your Show”, at which they were named victorious and won a $100,000 money prize. It was in 2008 that the group made their first TV appearance, following a script for a sitcom, but unfortunately the pilot episode wasn’t welcomed as Joe and the rest of his crew expected, and it was canceled even before it premiered.

Rise to Prominence

Despite faced with failure, Joe continued to write, and in 2009 the Tenderloins made the headlines with the television film “The Tenderloins”, which was a complete success, and launched the quartet into stardom. Soon afterwards, Joe started working on the reality TV series “The Impractical Jokers”, pitching the idea to TruTV. The show premiered on the 15th December 2011.

“The Impractical Jokers”

The show features The Tenderloins members as they perform pranks on strangers in the New York City public areas, such as parks and stores. What makes this show different and quite interesting is the fact that the stars of the Impractical Jokers are unaware of the details of the prank until they are performing it on strangers.

The show was well received by the critics and public, making it one of the most popular prank shows alongside “Jackass”, and “Candid Camera”. Most recently the show started airing its seventh season, and it’s been announced that the eighth season will start in February 2019. Thanks to the massive popularity of the show, several spin-offs have been created, including “Impractical Jokers: Inside Jokes” (2016-2017), “Impractical Jokers: After Party” (2017), and “Impractical Jokers Judging Joe” in 2018. Furthermore, the film “Impractical Jokers” has been announced, and production started in April 2018.
