Olynyk skipped his final season of college basketball and was taken by the Dallas Mavericks with the 13th overall choice in the 2013 NBA Draft before being immediately traded to the Boston Celtics. He joined the Miami Heat in July 2017 and played with them until the NBA Finals in 2020. Olynyk was dealt to the Houston Rockets in March 2021. In August of the same year, he agreed to join the Pistons. He also represents the national team of Canada.

From 2009 through 2013, Olynyk participated in collegiate basketball at Gonzaga. In his freshmen and sophomore seasons, he played mostly off the bench for the Bulldogs, averaging 12 to 13 minutes per game.
