Kali, of Native-American, African-American and German-Jewish ancestry, is the daughter of a mother who was a buyer for Bloomingdale’s, and a father who was in merchandising. Kali demonstrated a high IQ at an early age, which got her into high school when she was only 12 years old, and into university even before she turned 16 years old, studying at the State University of New York at Purchase.
Before she became a prominent actress, Kali was a model; she started with a couple of commercials for such brands as KFC, Clorox 2 and MTV Europe, while she also started appearing in music videos for such bands as KoRn and Rob Zombie, and musicians such as Norah Jones and Usher, among others. She made her acting debut in the short documentary film “Mighty Times: The Children’s March” in 2004, while two years later she appeared in several films, including the drama “I Can See Clearly Now” starring next to Scott Brandon and Chris Leone, and the horror film “Holla”, which had Shelli Boone, Young Sir and Charles Porter as the stars.

She felt the first rays of success in 2009 when she was chosen for the part of Trudy in the romantic comedy film “Couples Retreat”, starring Vince Vaughn Malin Akerman, and Jon Favreau. With the part of Trudy, Kali’s rise to prominence began; after that, she appeared in the comedy film “Get Him to the Greek” in 2010, and then in 2011 co-starred in another comedy – “Bridesmaids” – starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne. She continued quite successfully the very next year by portraying Shelby in the TV series “New Girl”, and then with the role of Gloria Peeples in the film “Peeples” in 2013.
Although a prominent lead role evaded Kali for a few more years, she never gave up looking for the one role that would make her a star, but before that happened, she was Maggie in the TV series “Black Jesus” from 2014 to 2015, and then in 2016 she was chosen for the part of Hannah Steale in the comedy film “Fifty Shades of Black”, which was a parody of the highly-acclaimed “Fifty Shades of Gray” from 2015. The film became a big office hit, grossing over $20 million from just a $5 million budget, and Kali was officially a star actress. She has continued with film roles since then, appearing in such projects as the romantic comedy “The Perfect Match”, also in 2016, and “White Chocolate” in 2018. She has also tried herself as a voice actress, lending her voice to several characters from the animated series “OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes” (2017-2018).
