Early Life, Family, and Education
Amy has been interested in home decorating and renovations from an early age, having her first taste of home decorating when she was 14 years old, becoming a member of a local church group that repaired homes for families in need. Realizing she liked the job, she joined other organization that focused on the same problem, and she was soon more into the house renovation business. Following her successful completion of high school, she enrolled at Boston University and then attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. After she obtained her degree, Amy returned to her native Minnesota, and her career was ready to start.

Career Beginnings
She became a part of the Guthrie Theatre, and then the Minnesota Opera, passing on her ideas while she also contributed to Hey City Theatre, Open Eye Figure Theatre, and Mixed Blood Theatre. Gradually, her skills were improving, and she found a place for herself with The Family Handyman magazine, while also obtaining a license to work as a general contractor.

Rise to Prominence
As her experience grew, more people heard about Amy, and she was offered a job at the DIY Network as a licensed contractor and home improvement specialist, and then on HGTV. In 2011 she became the host of the show “Sweat Equity”, which follows homeowners as they try to renovate their house within a budget, hopefully boosting the value of their home and being able to sell it at a profit. Thanks to the popularity of the show, Amy herself became rather popular with the public, but also at the network, which resulted in her being promoted to HGTV, and its “Renovation Raiders” show in 2013. The show depicts Amy’s trying to renovate a house in just five hours, and in that way surprises the owners. Unfortunately, after just one season the show was canceled. However, Amy’s work has been featured in a number of high profile publications, such as Country Living, Good Housekeeping, The New York Times, and Esquire, among others. She is now a home improvement advisor for HomeAdvisor, which is a digital marketplace that connects homeowners with pre-screened, local service professionals to complete home maintenance, improvements, and re-modeling projects.
An Accomplished Actress
In addition to her primary work, Amy is also an accomplished actress; she made her debut in 2002 with the role of Wendy in the independent comedy-drama film “How to Kill a Mockingbird”, written and directed by Joe Sweet. Two years later she appeared in the film “Justice”, while in 2009 she portrayed Nadine Brennan in the drama film “Into Temptation”, written and directed by Patrick Coyle, and starring Jeremy Sisto, Kristin Chenoweth and Brian Baumgartner. Most recently, Amy appeared in the TV series “In an Instant” (2017), as Julia Brown.
