Who is Valeria Golino?

Valeria Golino, born on the 22nd of October, 1965, is an Italian actress and director who became known through her roles in “Rain Man”, “Big Top Pee-wee”, and two “Hot Shots!” films. She is a multi-awarded actress, one of only three actresses to have twice won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival.

Valeria Golino’s Early Life

Golino was born in Naples, Italy, and is of Italian descent through her father – a Germanist scholar – and Greek through her mother, Lalla, who was an artist. Golino grew up in a very artistic home but never dreamt of becoming an actress when she was young, initially wanting to become a cardiologist, but everything changed when she was 14. As a teen she started working as a model, travelling to various parts of the globe, and with her busy schedule, decided to drop out of school and focus on her career instead.

Valeria Golino’s Career

Golino’s career started with modeling assignments in Milan, Athens, Los Angeles and London, appearing in various commercials and also modelling swimsuits and jeans. Her love for acting came when her uncle was contacted by director Lina Wetmuller, who was looking for a young girl for her movie“A Joke of Destiny” in 1983 – Golino auditioned, and got the part. Her initial experience on the set made her fall in love with acting, and she decided to leave the modelling world behind, although her early years both helped her career as well as her net worth.

Enjoying acting, Golino studied diction and elocution to further her career, and in 1985 once again graced the big screen, appearing in the movies “Little Flames” and “My Dearest Son”, which won her a Golden Globe for Best Breakthrough Actress. In 1986 Golino starred in “A Tale of Love” wherein she was rewarded with the Silver Ribbon award for Best Actress, the oldest and most prestigious critics’ prize in Italian cinema. She then starred in “The Gold Rimmed Glasses” and “Three Sisters,” and was now catapulted to stardom, and she also significantly increased her net worth.

Valeria Golino in Hollywood

In the late ‘80s Golino moved to Los Angeles to try her hand in Hollywood. In 1988, she scored a part in “Big Top Pee-Wee” as well as the drama “Rain Man”, playing the girlfriend of Tom Cruise, both well-known movies at that time, and which certainly introduced her to Hollywood. In 1991 she starred in “Hot Shots!” which became a huge hit, as did its sequel “Hot Shots! Part Deux” in 1993. Being described as a person with the driest and weirdest sense of humor, her early works in Hollywood consisted mostly of comedy films, but despite that being the case, they still helped considerably with her career as well as her wealth.

After a string of hit films, Golino worked back and forth between Los Angeles and Italy, appearing in both American and Italian projects. Some of the films she appeared in include “Leaving Las Vegas”, “Four Rooms”, “Escape from L.A.”, and “An Occasional Hell.”

Valeria Golino as a Director

After her successful career as an actress in both films and TV series, Golino eventually tried her hand as a director, with her first project being “Armandino e il Madre”, a short film released in 2010. In 2013, Golino released her first full-length film – entitled “Honey” – which won a commendation from the Ecumenical jury. Her career as a director also helped in her net worth. Today, Golino is still actively working as an actress and a director. Her most recent appearances include “Il colore nascosto delle cose” in 2017, and “Les Estivants” and “Daughter of Mine” in 2018. She also recently directed the film entitled “Euphoria” in 2018.

Attending the Celebrity Fight Night at Arena di Verona, Valeria Golino wore a deep V-neck gown with a trompe l’oeil sequins bow and crystal trim details from Gucc iPre-Fall 2018 by Alessandro Michele.
