Early Life, Family, and Education

Tristin is the youngest child born to Michael Mays and his wife Viveca; she has an older brother Jeryn, who like his sister is also an actor. She grew up in her hometown, but matriculated from Vista del Lago High School in Moreno Valley, California, to where she and her family moved when she was 13 years old.

Career Beginnings

She broke into the entertainment world as a cute child signed with the Ford Modeling Agency, which soon got her commercial gigs with Kraft Cheese, Play Skool-Aid, ROSS, McDonald’s, and Sunkist, among others, and her first acting role was as Angel in the television film “Harambee!”, starring Howard E. Rollins Jr., Carlton Beener and Novella Nelson. The following year she replaced Shaina M. Freeman in the children show “Gullah Gullah Island”, and later that year played Nala in “The Lion King” on Broadway, which was a tremendous accomplishment for a young girl. She continued her career by appearing as Fan in Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, and was subsequently cast as Robin Dixon in the TV mystery-drama series “Alias”, which was her breakout role, though she appeared only in three episodes.

Rise to Prominence

Focused on her education throughout the 2000s, Tristin wasn’t in search for new roles, but then in 2009 was chosen for the part of Taylor Bell in the TV drama series “Private”, and in 2011 started portraying Alicia in the TV comedy series “Fail” (2011-2012), in which her brother Jeryn also appeared. Since then, Tristin has featured in the comedy fantasy film “Thunderstruck” (2012), starring professional basketball player Kevin Durant, Taylor Gray and Jim Belushi, then starred in the comedy-drama “She Is Not My Sister” (2012), together with Lana Giacose and Kel Mitchell, while in 2015 she featured in the comedy film “The Wedding Ringer”, starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad and Kaley Cuoco. The same year she was selected for the part of Sarah Nelson in the critically-acclaimed TV fantasy-drama series “The Vampire Diaries” (2015-2016), and in 2016 portrayed the lead character in the horror thriller film “Happy Birthday”. Later that year Tristin was chosen for the female lead, Riley Davis, in the TV action-drama series “MacGyver”, co-starring Lucas Till and George Eads, appearing in all 44 episodes together with major stars, which made her extremely popular and extremely rich, since she receives around $70,000 per episode.

A Talented Musician

Over the years, Tristin developed and showcased her musical talents, as she was in an R&B group – Jane 3 – alongside Jerika Scott and Earanequa Carter. The trio collaborated with such musicians as T-Pain and Marques Houston, and some of their songs can be found on YouTube, including their hit “Screensaver”, among others.
