The football world is mourning the loss of Terry Venables, the former England manager who led the national team to the semi-finals of Euro 96.
Venables, who also managed Tottenham, Barcelona, Crystal Palace and QPR, died on Saturday at the age of 80 after a long illness.
Venables had had Dementia for several years, a condition that affects millions of people around the world.
Terry Venables Illness Before Death: What Happened?
Venables was diagnosed with Dementia in 2017 after he started to experience memory loss and confusion.
He revealed his condition in an interview with The Sun, saying that he was determined to fight the disease and keep his sense of humor.
He said, “I have got it and am dealing with it. I am trying to be as normal as possible. I have good and bad days, but that is what it is all about. I have a laugh with my family and friends, and that is the main thing.”
Venables also said that he was grateful for the support of his wife, Yvette, who cared for him at their home in Spain. He said: “She is fantastic. She looks after me very well. She is always there for me.”
Venables continued to follow football and watch his former teams on TV, but he admitted that he sometimes struggled to remember the players’ names or the matches’ scores.
He said: “I watch a lot of football, but I don’t always remember what I have seen. Sometimes, I forget who is playing or what the score is.”
Venables also revealed that he had undergone brain surgery in 2015 to remove a blood clot that had caused him to collapse at his home.

He said that he had recovered well from the operation but that it had affected his speech and balance.

He said: “I had a bleed on the brain, and they had to operate on me. It was quite serious, but I came through it OK. It did affect me a bit, though. I have trouble with my speech sometimes, and I get a bit wobbly on my feet.”
Terry Venables Health In 2023: Football Legend Battled With Dementia
Despite his illness, Venables remained active and positive until his final days. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing golf and listening to music.
He also received regular visits from his former players and colleagues, who paid tribute to him as a great manager and a great man.
One of them was Gary Lineker, who played under Venables at Barcelona and England. He said: “Terry was a wonderful manager and a wonderful person.”
“He had a brilliant football brain and a brilliant sense of humor. He was always fun to be around and always had a smile on his face.”
Another one was Paul Gascoigne, who starred for England at Euro 96 under Venables. He said: “Terry was like a father figure to me.
He gave me confidence and freedom on the pitch. He was always there for me off the pitch, too. He helped me through some tough times, and I will always love him for that.”
Venables also received support from the wider football community, who recognized his achievements and contributions to the game.
He was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Football Writers’ Association in 2018 and was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2019.
Venables died peacefully at his home in Spain on Saturday, surrounded by his loved ones.
His family issued a statement saying: “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long battle with dementia.”
“We would like to thank everyone for their kind messages and support at this challenging time.”
