Shirley Gibson was the Miami Gardens’ first mayor. In 1996, she was elected to the public offices of Community Council Three and the Miami Dade’s Democratic Party Executive Committee.

Likewise, Gibson was elected for two terms to Community Council Three. She also served as chairperson of the North Dade Municipal Advisory Committee and the Committee to Incorporate the City of Miami Gardens. 

Furthermore, she was also a Miami-Dade Police Officer who served for seventeen years. She also co-hosted a radio program named Miami Talk.
