His family released the following statement to the DPA news agency: “My husband and our father, Franz Beckenbauer, died away quietly in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family.

We announce this with deep regret. We want you to be allowed to grieve privately and not inquire about anything.”

Close friend and Beckenbauer’s captain in 1990, Lothar Matthäus, told the German daily Bild, “Even though I knew that Franz wasn’t feeling well, the shock is deep.” Germany as a whole and football both suffer from his passing.

At the club level, Beckenbauer is revered as a Bayern Munich excellent after winning four Bundesliga titles and three straight European Cups with the German powerhouses from 1974 to 1976.

More than most, Beckenbauer shaped German football as a player and coach. In 1974, he led West Germany to victory in the World Cup.
